Why You Should Hug Your Loved One Everyday?

If you’re not much of a hugger, think again, as new research suggests that a cuddle with your loved one could have plenty of health benefits.
Academics from Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania have concluded that a hug can improve physical and psychological health, while also benefiting relationships.
They propose that interpersonal touch of this kind acts as a buffer against the effects of interpersonal conflict and the psychological stress that comes with it, but noted that there is limited research into the influence of hugs specifically, as scientists have largely focused on the role of touch in romantic relationships.
In their study, the researchers interviewed 404 adult men and women every night for 14 consecutive days about their conflicts, number of hugs received, and positive and negative moods.
They found that receiving a hug on the same day a participant had engaged in conflict was associated with a smaller decrease in positive emotions and a smaller increase in negative emotions. They also suspected that the benefits may have lingered, as participants reported a continued reduction in negative mood the next day.
Michael Murphy of Carnegie Mellon University believes these findings suggest that hugs may be a simple yet effective method of providing support to both men and women experiencing interpersonal distress, and is keen to engage in more research to determine possible mechanisms.
“This research is in its early stages. We still have questions about when, how, and for whom hugs are most helpful,” he explained. “However, our study suggests that consensual hugs might be useful for showing support to somebody enduring relationship conflict.”
